The WHO Centre for Health Development (WHO Kobe Centre – WKC) has expanded its series of research briefs on Financing LTC: Lessons for Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) to include evidence on workers in LTC.

Brief 9 in the series extracts key research findings for policy-makers on supporting workers in the formal long-term care system. Personal care workers are the backbone of the formal LTC system, typically accounting for a most of the LTC workers. Most are women across all regions and levels of economic development.

LTC services will increase in demand because populations are ageing and also the health and social care needs are increasing. Strong recruitment and retention strategies are required and could include targeting informal caregivers and students.
