COVID-19 Health System Response Monitor: Indonesia

Overview

Indonesia set up the Task Force for the Acceleration of COVID-19 handling in March 2020. Areas within the country were categorized into four coloured zones based on the transmission and spread of COVID. The zones were used to communicate warnings and served as cues for local governments to boost testing, tracing and treatment. Updates on COVID-19 were conveyed by the taskforce spokesperson, live information provided via the official website. Mainstream media, including social media were an important source of information on the virus, and served as the primary source of information for people.

Two sets of restrictions encompassing covering a range of measures to limit mobility/community interaction such as school closures, restrictions of religious, sociocultural activities etc., were implemented: the large scale social restrictions (PSBB) and the enforcement of limitations on community activities (PPKM). Clinical criterions were established to guide isolation and quarantine measures. Public self-isolation facilities and hospitals were set up in public buildings. All COVID-19 related medical procedures were to be provided free for all Indonesian residents, regardless of their nationalities and insurance coverage. A phased vaccination programme was initiated in January 2021.
